Electric Current Passes Through Jagannath Rath Yatra Chariot, One Dead, 17 Devotees Injured

Meerut: A major accident occurred on Friday during the Lord Jagannath Rath Yatra in the Parikshitgarh area of Meerut district. The chariot came into contact with an overhead high-tension power line, causing electric current to pass through it. The incident claimed the life of 25-year-old Sachin on the spot, while 17 devotees sustained burn injuries. Two of the injured, who are reported to be in critical condition, have been referred to Meerut for advanced medical treatment.

According to eyewitnesses, the Rath Yatra was proceeding with great religious enthusiasm when the upper portion of the chariot came into contact with the high-tension electricity line. Within moments, the chariot became electrified, triggering panic and chaos among the devotees gathered nearby. The scene quickly turned distressing, with cries for help echoing through the area.

Upon receiving information about the incident, Station House Officer (SHO) Sudesh Sirohi immediately reached the spot with a police team. With the assistance of local residents, the injured were rushed to the hospital, and rescue and relief operations were initiated without delay. His prompt response and quick decision-making helped save the lives of several devotees. The police also ensured that the electricity supply was immediately disconnected to bring the situation under control.

Soon after, Superintendent of Police (Rural) Abhijeet Kumar also arrived at the scene and supervised medical arrangements for the injured. The body of the deceased, Sachin, has been sent for post-mortem examination. Police have launched an investigation into the incident.

The tragic accident has cast a pall of gloom over the entire region, leaving devotees and local residents deeply shocked and mourning the loss.
